Blonde UK grown scutched flax dew retted just requires hackling (combing) to prepare it for spinning. The hackling will produce longline fibre, the more you hackle it the fibre becomes finer with a resulting fine yarn. The tow we run through drum carders and spin from a distaff in a similar way to the long fibres.
Alternatively carding bats can be used to make rolags similar to wool. Proportions of line to tow are 30% long fibre to 70% tow.
May contain a few shives.
Grown in the UK by commercial growers, scutched in Europe producing a beautiful flax we can achieve a fine thread of up to 40 lea on the long fibres and typically spin a 10 lea or higher tow thread.
